Alliance partners invited for £2bn TransPennine rail upgrade

Network Rail is inviting suppliers to express interest in becoming alliance partners for delivery of the TransPennine rail improvement. As reported by Construction Enquirer, Network Rail is seeking solutions from consortia of multi-disciplinary suppliers.

The project, billed as an essential scheme of government’s Northern Powerhouse initiative, will involve electrification and track and structures improvements to increase capacity and line speeds between Manchester, Leeds and York.

The scheme has been enlarged since funding was first secured in 2011. Planning, design and construction, which is expected to cost up to £2bn, has been extended into the next investment Control Period from 2019 to 2024 in the wake of cost and programme overruns elsewhere in Network Rail’s CP5 delivery programme.
