Skanska BAM Nuttall JV to deliver Manchester’s Ordsall Chord

A Skanska BAM Nuttall JV will deliver the Ordsall Chord project in Manchester following the signing of a contract this week.

The chord will link Victoria and Piccadilly stations in the city with an £85m viaduct project. The JV has been working on the design of the project since 2013.

Under a new delivery arrangement Amey, Skanska, Bam Nuttall, and signalling specialist Siemens have formed a partnership with Network Rail. Construction on the project was due to begin by early 2015 but was delayed due to the planning process.

Ordsall Chord will see a 340m-long viaduct join the Bolton line with the Chat Moss line, crossing the River Irwell on a new bridge. When complete the project will help to ease rail delays south of Piccadilly station and lead to faster and more frequent services across the north.

The chord is part of the Northern Hub project which will improve railway services across the north of England.

BIM technology will be used during the construction phase as the contractors draw on each other’s experience bringing whole-life costing and carbon foot-printing considerations to the project.

The next phase of the project will see the realignment of existing track outside Manchester Victoria to enable the chord to fit in.
