NEXUS picks WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff to help modernise Tyne and Wear Metro

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has been appointed by the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (NEXUS) to provide design and engineering services on the Tyne and Wear Metro, as part of a four-year technical and commercial consultancy services framework.

The strategic framework will help drive Nexus’s ongoing £350 million Metro modernisation programme, which features new tracks, power lines, revamped stations and refurbished trains.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff will provide consultancy in station design, transport and highways infrastructure, civil and structural engineering, building services, safety quality and environment, and programme and project management.

The consultancy is one of five successful tenderers appointed on the framework and will compete for work on a mini-competition basis. The other successful firms are Capita Property & Infrastructure, Ove Arup & Partners International, Arcadis Consulting and AECOM.

Chris Reid, rail project manager at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff said: “Being part of this framework is a testament to the strength of our combined transport and infrastructure offering in the North East. We look forward to supporting Nexus in their drive to modernise the 35 year old light-rail system so that it can continue to serve the public long into the future and be better equipped to serve growing passenger number in Tyne and Wear.”

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has extensive experience in the region, including design and engineering services on the award-winning New Tyne Crossing, the revolutionary Gateshead district energy centre and Newcastle’s Discovery School.
