New Chester Bus Interchange successfully tops out

The new bus interchange at Gorse Stacks in Chester has successfully topped out. Mott MacDonald is providing multidisciplinary design services to Cheshire West and Chester Council on the project, which will help unlock the economic growth benefits of the £300m Northgate mixed-use development in the city.

Located on Hoole Way roundabout, the new interchange will replace the existing bus station which is no longer capable of catering for the large number of visitors who visit the city. Expected to handle 1,020 bus movements per day including national coach journeys, it will improve public transport access into the city, reduce congestion and provide better integration between rail users, pedestrians and cyclists.

Mott MacDonald was appointed as lead consultant for the new interchange through the Warrington Borough Council Transportation and Public Realm Consultancy Services framework. The consultancy has provided structural, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, transport planning, highways and drainage design as well as geo-environmental, air quality and acoustics services. Austin Smith: Lord was architect for the project, with archaeology undertaken by Earthworks Archaeology and Graham Construction acting as principal contractor.

Marc Nadim, Mott MacDonald’s project manager, said: “The Gorse Stacks bus interchange will be crucial in providing improved transport services to the people of Chester, especially those with mobility needs who wish to visit the city centre. We’re delighted to have played a key role in this exciting project that will support both the Northgate development and the wider Chester Business Quarter.”

Construction of the new bus interchange is expected to be completed in early 2017.
